Eleanor is a singer. Her songs keep nature in balance, but when they are stolen from her, a grey mist descends and her world fails to thrive. This timid orphan is thrust into a course of action she never asked for, nor envisioned. Set against a backdrop of abandonment, loss and betrayal, she must find her way through strange and dangerous landscapes in her desperate search for the Perfect Tear, a dark crystal which holds the future of her world. But, Eleanor is no savior. She is a simple girl with strong instincts and she must learn to trust them. Just like the notes of song must connect to create a melody, Eleanor must discover the connections needed to create the harmony required to truly save her world.

MY TIDBITS

With a mixture of classic fairy tale and a dab of science fiction, this story takes a fantastic journey into music, DNA and discovering the treasure of life.

Eleanor is an orphan with a very special gift; she's a singer. She lives in a world where life itself is founded on music, and all is called into creation through a musical formula. And she is one of the most special creations of all. When one of her fellow beings decides to alter the basis music, the entire existence threatens to fall apart, and Eleanor is the only one who can save them all.

The writing reminds of a more classic fantasy style, not dwelling on a up-beat, fast moving plot, but rather on developing a beautiful and fascinating world. Life, in this book, is founded on music and to maintain it, the foundation has to remain in perfect balance. The idea behind this is well explained without ever becoming too scientific and molds into the plot wonderfully well. The world comes to life, and even though very different than our reality, grows familiar enough that it's easy to get lost in.

The characters in this book are well done. Each one has their own goals and clear reasons for making the choices they do. Eleanor might be orphaned, but the happy memories of her childhood give her a lovely touch and make her easy to like. It's no problem to root for her until the very end. But then, even her friends are enjoyable to meet. Each one has their very own personality, and also give the story a great touch of diversity without feeling forced.

Although Eleanor is the main character, the story is told from different points of view and slides from one to the other to allow the layers and depth of the tale to come to life. Although this was a bit jolting at times, it created the perfect base for the different layers to unfold, while giving needed insight into the reasoning behind each character's thoughts and actions. This isn't the fastest paced story, but rather maintains just the right tempo to let the world sink in while keeping pace with many unexpected twists and turn. And the ending leaves the hint of a promise that there might be more to come.

And here she is. . .
